If you are a chocolate lover like me, then you probably can’t stand to go more than a couple of days without biting into that rich, euphoric little piece of heaven! With March being National Nutrition Month however, I have been trying to kick my healthy life style up a notch (translation: standing up to and fighting my chocolate cravings)…up until now! The New York Times recently published an article, The Chocolate Diet? which gives another reason to indulge (in moderation of course) in our chocolate desires. Proving that chocolate can serve a greater purpose (other than sticking to my thighs) is nothing new, but this particular health study discusses how “antioxidants and other compounds in chocolate may deliver a metabolic boost that can offset it’s caloric downside.”
Just click on this link, Chocolate Lovers Unite! to read the article in it’s entirety. WESTERN HEALTH DISCLAIMER: We are in no way telling our readers to gobble down a pound of chocolate every day. In fact, this article clearly states that those who reaped the healthy benefits of chocolate did not consume large amounts of it in one sitting, but rather consumed small amounts of it more frequently So, the next time you are pondering whether or not that Hershy Kiss you desperately want to pop into your mouth is going to set you back on your healthy quest this month, fear not! Unwrap that chocolatey goodness with a smile and enjoy!

To keep up with our theme of nutrition this month a new study released by the American Chemical Society has found that popcorn is a great source of polyphenols which have antioxidant properties. Polyphenols may be able to help prevent degenerative diseases like cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer.
The study finds that popcorn has higher concentrated levels of polyphenols than fruits and vegetables. Popcorn is also low in calories and contains a lot of fiber. Popcorn is the perfect substitute for snacking foods like chips and crackers.
Just remember that adding loads of salt and butter may negate the health benefits of popcorn. Also, even though popcorn does contain higher concentrated amounts of antioxidants, it shouldn’t be used as a substitute for your regular intake of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain many more essential vitamins and fibers that are vital for overall health.
So tonight after work go ahead and turn on your favorite movie and POP some popcorn with the family!

With March being National Nutrition Month we thought it was a good idea to give some tips to those who really need to pay attention to their nutrition (even though EVERYBODY does), people with diabetes.
If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes - have no fear! Your days of eating amazingly tasting plates have just begun. You may not be able to enjoy donuts and pizza anymore, but now you get to open your diet to the wonderful world of fruits, vegetables and proteins. You will begin to feel better and even shed some pounds. You can start by following these 6 tips. Thanks to the American Diabetes Foundation for providing these:
Six Easy Steps to Create Your Plate
It’s simple and effective for both managing diabetes and losing weight. Creating your plate let’s you still choose the foods you want, but changes the portion sizes so you are getting larger portions of non-starchy vegetables and a smaller portion of starchy foods. When you are ready, you can try new foods within each food category.
Try these six simple steps to get started:
Using your dinner plate, put a line down the middle of the plate.
- Then on one side, cut it again so you will have 3 sections on your plate.
- Fill the largest section with non-starchy vegetables such as:
- spinach, carrots, lettuce, greens, cabbage, bok choy
- green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes,
- vegetable juice, salsa, onion, cucumber, beets, okra,
- mushrooms, peppers, turnip
- Now in one of the small sections, put starchy foods such as:
- whole grain breads, such as whole wheat or rye
- whole grain, high-fiber cereal
- cooked cereal such as oatmeal, grits, hominy, or cream of wheat
- rice, pasta, dal, tortillas
- cooked beans and peas, such as pinto beans or black-eyed peas
- potatoes, green peas, corn, lima beans, sweet potatoes, winter squash
- low-fat crackers and snack chips, pretzels, and fat-free popcorn
- And then on the other small section, put your meat or meat substitutes such as:
- chicken or turkey without the skin
- fish such as tuna, salmon, cod, or catfish
- other seafood such as shrimp, clams, oysters, crab, or mussels
- lean cuts of beef and pork such as sirloin or pork loin
- tofu, eggs, low-fat cheese
- Add an 8 oz glass of non-fat or low-fat milk. If you don’t drink milk, you can add another small serving of carb such as a 6 oz. container of light yogurt or a small roll.
- And a piece of fruit or a 1/2 cup fruit salad and you have your meal planned. Examples are fresh, frozen, or canned in juice or frozen in light syrup or freshfruit.
